'What a fantastic player' - Exclusive: Whelan in awe of Wolves 28yo just like Liverpool duo

Noel Whelan claimed Matt Doherty is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League following his performance for Wolves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The former Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, highlighted the willingness of the 28-year-old to get into the box as a particular strength.

Doherty scored one and assisted one as the Wanderers came from behind twice to beat Spurs 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez were also on the scoresheet as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side overtook their opponents and moved into sixth position in the league.

When asked whether there are many better right-backs in the Premier League than Doherty, Whelan told Football Insider: “I would probably say not. He is fantastic going forward and defensively. He is aggressive and has got great energy about him. What a fantastic player.

“His goal was brave because taking the full-back all the way down into that area and then cutting inside into the box… A lot of full-backs would have stayed at the far post. That to me is somebody who wants to score a goal. You will not many full-backs in that position.

“You see goals from the likes of (Andy) Robertson and (Trent) Alexander Arnold but they are on the edge of the area. Doherty has got himself into a central role. If you are going to go all that way you might as well get yourself in the best position to score and that is in the centre.”

The Republic of Ireland international has scored seven goals in 37 appearances in all competitions this season.

It was Doherty’s second goal this week after netting in the 3-2 away defeat to Espanyol which was enough the Wanderers to qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League.
