Darren Bent has been left head over heels with Rangers striker Jermain Defoe after his impressive goalscoring record at Ibrox this season.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 37-year-old has done incredibly well to continue scoring regularly despite playing second fiddle to Alfredo Morelos.
Defoe has 15 goals in 27 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s men during the 2019/20 campaign, but only 12 of those outings have come among the starting XI.
After seeing his former teammate net from the penalty spot in the Scottish Cup win over Stranraer, Bent says Defoe is doing an amazing job at staying fit and in fine form.
“What a player, what a goalscorer,” Bent told Football Insider.
“It doesn’t surprise me, I knew he’d go up there and score goals because he’s a top player. He looks after himself, works hard, wants to score goals, that’s all he wants to do, score goals.
“That’s why if Morelos went, I think they’d be alright because they’ve got him there. Of course you’d have to bring someone in because mother nature, father time is catching up with him, but at the same time he’s still in great nick and scores goals consistently.
“An all-time legend.”
Defoe has scored 11 times in the Premiership this season despite being named in the starting XI just eight times, netting at a rate of a goal every 67 minutes.
He has two hat tricks under his belt already, with three goals against Hibernian and Hamilton in the early stages of the campaign.
