Whelan 'amazed' as Celtic 'have just signed the new Larsson'

Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi after his man of the match display against Dundee on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker even compared the 26-year-old to Hoops legend Henrik Larsson.

Furuhashi scored a hattrick on his home debut to help Ange Postecoglou’s side kickstart their season with a 6-0 win over Dundee.

It comes just days after the Japanese forward, who was signed from Vissel Kobe last month, scored on his full debut against FK Jablonec.

Whelan was particularly impressed by Furuhashi’s movement yesterday.

“What I loved about his performance was his willingness to run in behind,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.

“You could see how clever his movement is in the goals. The second one he faints the defender and checks in behind him for a tap in.

“You need somebody lively in and around that area and the last person I think they had like that was Henrik Larsson. He brings that excitement when he gets on the ball.

“He is always on the shoulder, thinking about getting behind the defence. If you get good service into him he is going to cause a lot of problems.

“He looks a really exciting player and an amazing signing. Celtic have just signed the new Larsson. He’s stepped up to the plate after what has been a rough start. Hopefully this is the beginning of a good run of form for Celtic.”
