Whelan baffled as Aston Villa source reveals Smith sack update
Noel Whelan is baffled by the notion that Dean Smith’s job as Aston Villa boss is under threat.
The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of Villa Park.
Football Insider revealed on (14 September) from an Aston Villa source that Smith is fighting for his job and the sack is a possibility if he cannot inspire a turnaround ahead of the next international break.
A Villa source revealed Smith’s relationship with chief executive Christian Purslow has weakened following the departures of coaches John Terry and Richard O’Kelly.
The Villains are 12th in the Premier League after only winning one of their opening four games.
Whelan insists you can’t judge a manager with only four games played this season.

“It is very premature to start talking about a manager’s job, I don’t get that,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“It’s too early in the season. Villa have gone out and bought some brilliant players and it will take time for them to gel.
“At the same time, the amount of money they have spent, I expect better performances and results.
“What they have done in the transfer market means they should be aiming for the top eight.
“With the players they have and the team they have assembled, despite losing Grealish, that is the aim.
“They haven’t got off to a great start, it’s been a mixed bag. I don’t think there’s any reason to worry so early on in the season.
“Every team in the league is trying to find their feet other than the top four.”
