Whelan blown away by Aston Villa plans after Guardian's Ward-Prowse update

Noel Whelan is excited by the thought of James Ward-Prowse joining Aston Villa this summer.

The former Leeds hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Villa will have “creativity and excitement written all over” if the midfielder signs.

On 6th June, The Guardian reported the Villians are targetting Ward-Prowse after completing a club-record deal for Emiliano Buendia.

Football Insider revealed during the weekend that Buendia had his heart set on heading to Villa Park after being convinced by their “huge” ambition and plans to strengthen this summer

A Villa source has told Football Insider that the total cost of the deal including the wages spread across a five-year contract will be a mammoth £57m.

Ward-Prowse, 26, scored eight goals and picked up seven assists during the recently concluded Premier League season.

He was part of England’s 33-man provisional Euro 2020 squad but didn’t make the final cut.

Whelan insists a three-pronged midfield of Ward-Prowse, Buendia and Jack Grealish can be deadly in the Premier League.

“If you get Ward-Prowse and Buendia, can you afford to let Grealish go?” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“In my opinion, yes. You’ve covered bases there. You have two players who can produce the same as Grealish does.

“Ward-Prowse has a better delivery and he works harder in the midfield. Add Buendia to that mix and you have the creativity and the player who can open doors.

“If they can keep all three then you’re wondering how to fit them all in. They would be a fantastic side.

“They would be dangerous from all kinds of positions. You’ve got creativity and excitement written all over Villa if you have those three.

“I’m just not sure how to fit them all in.”
