Whelan digs at Costa as Leeds reportedly swoop for wide man who terrorised Man City three times
Noel Whelan has claimed Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet could be a smart signing for Leeds United this summer as he can play as a winger and as a left-back.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites and Middlesbrough striker claimed the 24-year-old’s experience in big games could be beneficial to Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the 2021-22 campaign.
The Sun (13 June) claimed Leeds are “keen” on signing Cornet as a potential replacement for Ezgjan Alioski, who is out of contract at the end of this month.
Lyon are said to want £20million for the wide man, who has scored four goals in three career appearances against Manchester City.
Whelan suggested Cornet could also be viewed as an alternative to Helder Costa at Elland Road.
“Marcelo Bielsa loves a winger who can play at left-back, ” he told Football Insider. “We have seen that with Alioski.

“We are always in the hunt for new wingers and never really strikers!
“We have had a poor season from Helder Costa and that has opened the door for another winger to come in. We needed more from him last year. He made a good start before going completely off the boil. He was a passenger in a lot of games. There is a big question mark over Costa right now.
“Another winger and a new left-back is required this summer and Cornet could potentially tick both those boxes.
“More attacking quality is always welcome. Cornet would add strength in depth and competition for places.
“It’s going to be a tough season next year with fans coming back in and someone like Cornet, who has played for a big club in big games, would help us.“
