Whelan expects Griffiths to sign new Celtic deal after update via Sky
Noel Whelan has tipped Ange Postecoglou to give Celtic the green light to extend Leigh Griffiths’ contract this summer.
The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the new Hoops boss would want the 30-year-old to stay at Parkhead next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports (June 18th), Griffiths revealed he had already held “positive” talks with Postecoglou over his future.
With the 30-year-old’s contract expiring this summer, Sky report Celtic are yet to trigger their optional one-year extension.
However, Whelan suggested Postecoglou could not afford to lose a player of his quality.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think the manager needs every player behind him right now.

“I don’t think he needs to start getting rid of players straight away as he walks through the door.
“He’ll have looked at his plans, looked at videos spoke to every individual player by themselves over the phone or in the office.
“He’ll be reassuring them he needs them next season and giving them that boost the players need. It’s not been a great season for Celtic.
“There’s lots of question marks over lots of players but right now I don’t think the manager can afford to start making enemies with any of the players.
“He needs them all behind him. On his day, Leigh Griffiths, one of the best finishers in Scottish football. So he’ll get a clean slate.”
Griffiths scored seven goals in 26 games for the Bhoys during the 2020/21 campaign.
However, only nine of his appearances came among the starting XI.
