Leeds United have been tipped to land up to four top-quality signings in a “busy” summer after a season riddled with injuries.

That’s according to former Leeds man Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former side’s summer transfer plans.

United spent heavily on new signings last summer – nearly £100million – as well as investing heavily in youthful talent but injuries have rocked a relatively thin senior squad.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, a repeat is in store this summer and Victor Orta and his recruitment team are already working on sourcing some blockbuster signings in what is expected to be a busy summer.

Kalvin Phillips is the latest first-team player to pick up a knock and Whelan claims Leeds need to sign more midfield cover this summer.

He also insisted the club need a natural left back to replace Ezgjan Alioski and a striker to ease the burden on Patrick Bamford.

Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Again we’ll be very busy and active in the transfer window.

“It depends on what kind of players we are going to go for. £100million won’t go very far if you’re going to get three or four quality players, that’s what we spent last time.

“I’d like to see four quality players come in during the summer, a lot like our summer window last year.

“I don’t think there’s any point in going and spending £5million on a player that won’t improve the squad. If we want to go that step further, we have to splash the cash.

“A central midfielder is desperately needed to compete with [Mateusz] Klich and [Stuart] Dallas and a defensive midfielder to help Kalvin Phillips.

“We definitely need another striker. To ease the load on Patrick Bamford because he’s ever-present and needs some respite.

“We also definitely need a natural left-back. I think there’ll be three or four signings but they’ll be quality signings.”

Phillips was absent for Leeds’ trip to Arsenal as Pascal Struijk once again filled in during the 4-2 defeat.

The defeat knocked Leeds back into the bottom half of the Premier League after rising to tenth with last week’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

In other Leeds United news, Kevin Campbell has made a big claim about Illan Meslier.
