Ronnie Whelan: Klopp needs more than this unreliable Liverpool 27-year-old
By Harvey Byrne
Liverpool great Ronnie Whelan has explained that Daniel Sturridge still can’t be relied upon despite his goal scoring display in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over West Ham.
The 27-year-old striker made his first league start for the Reds at the London Stadium since January’s 2-2 draw against Sunderland.
Like the match against the Black Cats he opened the scoring in the comfortable victory and there is certainly no doubt that the 25-time capped England international still knows where the back of the net is.
However, there are still questions remaining over his injury record and ex-midfielder Whelan has told how Jurgen Klopp needs more than a player who “can’t be relied upon to get out on a training pitch”.
“Daniel Sturridge did Liverpool a favour when he finally showed up to play against West Ham and scored,” wrote Whelan in his column for the Irish Independent.

“From the club’s point of view, the goal proved he can still do it and that will have been noted by several clubs, including West Ham who were on the wrong end of a hammering.
“For Jurgen Klopp, the goal simply underlined what he has been missing during the last two seasons. If Sturridge could be relied on to do that every week, end of story.
“But he can’t be relied upon to get out on a training pitch, never mind play a consistent run of games, and Klopp needs more than that.
“Some might argue that Klopp has been patient and careful and will now reap the benefits for his approach to a fragile player.
“And there is the possibility that if Sturridge leaves and starts scoring for fun at his new club everyone will have cause for regret, but I think we have passed that point.”
Sturridge made the switch to Liverpool from Chelsea in the January 2013 window for a price of £12million.
He proved a huge success in his first few months at the club alongside Luis Suarez, returning 10 goals in his first 14 appearances for the club.
He has so far totalled 61 goals in 118 for the prestigious team, but he has been in and out of the team this season under Klopp and with two years remaining on his contract there is serious doubts in regards to his future at Liverpool.
