It is ‘very exciting’ for Leeds United that Josh Doig had been given a rave review by Steven Gerrard, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds ace, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed that Gerrard’s endorsement of the Hibernian full back can only be good news for Leeds.
Back in January, Goal reported that Leeds hold a keen interest in Doig along with Manchester City and Celtic.
After the Gers’ 2-1 win over Hibs two weeks ago, Gerrard is quoted by the Daily Record as saying, “Doig is a good player, again, huge potential.”
Doig, 18, recently spoke out about this transfer speculation and is quoted by Edinburgh Live as labelling it ‘madness’.
When asked if getting rave reviews from Gerrard was a promising endorsement, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Yeah, that’s very positive.
“He’s a really good, young, up and coming full back and there have been some fantastic full backs that have come out of Scotland.
“If Gerrard is giving him high applause then fantastic because he must be a top player because he knows what top players are all about.
“Let’s just hope he’s not looking at stealing him away to Rangers because we need a full-back and someone who can be here for five or six seasons.
“Bielsa likes the younger players, we know that, so this is really exciting that this top prospect could be coming to Leeds.”
Doig has played fairly regularly for Hibs this season, making 24 appearances in the Scottish Premiership so far.
His attacking ability is clear with the defender picking up one goal and four assists during his 29 appearances in all competitions this term.
