Noel Whelan has welcomed Leeds United handing a lucrative new deal to Mateusz Klich but warned there can’t be a repeat of his “embarrassing” penalty blunder last weekend.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Wayne Veysey, the ex-United forward explained how important it is for the club to secure the future of the Poland international.

But he also insisted how Klich was as guilty as anyone as Leeds threw two points away against Derby County last Saturday and urged him to be more ruthless going forwards.

This comes after Football Insider reported earlier today that Klich is in talks to sign a new contract after being offered a significant pay hike by the club.

“It’s important to keep Klich, there’s no better midfielder in the Championship at the moment,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I like what he does on and off the ball, and he buys into what Marcelo Bielsa wants.

“He missed the penalty last weekend, which was embarrassing. A player of his quality should not be missing the goal, which for a professional player is criminal. Had he scored, we would have won easily.

“But, overall, he deserves a new contract as he does a great job from midfield. He’s not scored as many goals this season, but I think that will come for him. He needs to be more ruthless and so do the whole team.”

Klich was one of Leeds’ most prolific scorers last season, when his 48 league and play-off matches yielded 10 goals and nine assists.

His current contract expires at the end of the season.
