Noel Whelan has ripped into Leeds United attacker Helder Costa for his performance against Aston Villa.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old showed “absolutely nothing” in his 64 minutes on the pitch and did not take his opportunity.
Costa replaced Jack Harrison in the starting XI on Saturday as Marcelo Bielsa’s side lost 1-0 at Elland Road.
It was the £16million summer signing’s first Premier League start since 7 November – a 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.
He completed just 61 per cent of his attempted passes against Villa and won just 43 per cent of his duels. (Wyscout)
When asked for his assessment of Costa’s performance, Whelan told Football Insider:
“Costa was given his opportunity and once again he did not take it.
“We are talking about a £16million player here who did not effect the game in any way shape or form.
“He needs to show consistency. You need to make that position your own when your manager puts his trust in you from the start.
“I saw absolutely nothing from him against Aston Villa. Nothing suggested to me that he has given Marcelo Bielsa a headache with that performance.
“You have got to come up with something special to break down a low block and we just could not manage it on Saturday. The quality was not there from the wide areas and Patrick Bamford was very isolated.”
