Whelan tells Aston Villa push through Ward-Prowse deal after key Monday update
Noel Whelan claims Aston Villa should focus their efforts on signing James Ward-Prowse instead of Sander Berge.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to Villa’s reported interest in both players.
Birmingham Live have claimed Aston Villa and Arsenal are interested in signing Berge this summer.
Their latest claim is that the Gunners have baulked at Sheffield United’s asking price for the 23-year-old.
On Monday (21st June) Football Insider revealed Ward-Prowse is interested in quitting Southampton to join Villa this summer.
Whelan claims both players can do a job for Villa but urged the club to move for Ward-Prowse.

“He’s a bit different to Ward-Prowse,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“There’s a good size on him and he has a good engine. He would fit in the side but he’s not as exciting as Ward-Prowse.
“If you want your top target, you go and get your top target.
“Villa have the money. They can make it happen. There’s no doubt about that.
“You could get Berge at a better price but when it comes to set-piece quality, Ward-Prowse would take them to the next level.
“Especially with the players already in that midfield. That’s the main point, getting players that can break them into the top six.
“Ward-Prowse would do that. Berge adds something but not as much as Ward-Prowse.”
Berge made 15 Premier League appearances as Sheffield United were relegated last season.
Ward-Prowse narrowly missed out on going to Euro 2020 with England after being called up to Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad.
