Whelan tells Celtic new keeper is 'absolute must' as Ryan set for medical in Spain
Noel Whelan insists Celtic must continue their hunt for a new goalkeeper after a blow in their hunt for Mat Ryan.
The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the lastest on the Hoops’ hunt for the Australia international.
On Monday (5th July) a recruitment source told Football Insider that Real Sociedad are set to win the race for Ryan’s signature.
He has agreed personal terms with the Spanish club and is set to undergo a medical this week.
Whelan claims Celtic are two weeks behind every other club in the transfer market and predicts a tough search for a new goalkeeper.
“Yeah, they need a new number one,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“They need to get some players over the line to whet the mouths of the Celtic fans.
“They are just missing out and falling short at the minute. It’s taken them so long to get a manager in. They are about two weeks behind everyone else.
“If they can start getting some players over the line the fans can get excited for the season.
“They need to be the right players too. A goalkeeper is an absolute must for Celtic.
“Someone who can command that area and make you feel safe at the back as a defender.
“At the minute it’s a tough search for good goalkeepers. You are looking at getting another club’s number two.”
Ryan has previously played in Spain during a two-year spell at Valencia.
He spent last season on loan at Arsenal but only made three appearances.
