Whelan: This may be how Leeds beat giants to Firpo signing

Noel Whelan has suggested Marcelo Bielsa played a huge role in luring prospective new signing Junior Firpo to Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker claimed the 24-year-old will have been tempted to join the Whites thanks to their exciting brand of football.

As revealed by Football Insider (July 3rd), Firpo is set to undergo a medical and complete a move to Elland Road over the coming days.

It is understood Leeds have beaten Serie A heavyweights AC Milan and Inter Milan to his capture.

The Whites are set to pay Barcelona an initial £12.8millon, rising to a potential £15.5million with add-ons.

Whelan insisted Leeds are an attractive destination for any new player.

However, he suggested Bielsa was a key part in getting Firpo on board.

Asked how he thought Leeds had managed to beat the Italian giants to the left-back, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You look at the manager.

I think you look at what’s going to be developing at Leeds United over a number of years now. The extension at the stadium, the improvements at the training ground over the summertime.

“The players we’ve got and are looking to bring in. We’ve got more internationals than we’ve had for a long, long time.

“I think when you look at the style of play, how we played last year and how we matched the top six, you can see we’re a team looking to push further, develop and improve.

When it comes to the stadium, look where you’re going to be playing. It’s the Premier League, fantastic.

Marcelo Bielsa, brilliant. Look at the style of play, he fits the bill perfectly.
