'I can see him joining' - Whelan tips Leeds to sign PL goal machine in Jan if Qatar deal agreed

Noel Whelan has tipped Leeds United to sign Dwight Gayle in January if they can get some cash loaned from Qatar to boost their promotion bid.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the Newcastle United striker would be a “perfect” short-term arrival.

Whelan claimed Leeds’ promotion bid is very much in the air and there is no guarantee they will be one of the three sides who go up from the Championship this season.

He mentioned Gayle as a possible January target after owner Andrea Radrizzani revealed in a Times interview today he is considering an offer from Qatar to take the club to a level where they could “compete with Manchester City”.

“I’ve seen the Radrizzani interview and it is exciting for Leeds fans,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He talks about new investment if we get promoted this season.

“What Leeds need is investment not just for the Premier League, but for the January window. He should be looking to get a loan or some cash front-loaded for January. There is no guarantee we are going to go up.

“Do a deal now and and get some money in. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, just enough to immediately improve the team.

“I’m thinking a loan deal for someone like Dwight Gayle. He’d be perfect for us, a proven striker who could well be available and who has a brilliant record in the Championship.

“I can see him joining. We would just have to match his Newcastle wages, which Leeds probably wouldn’t be able to afford without new investment. That’s the reality.”

Gayle has an outstanding record in the Championship, netting 59 goals from 100 matches in the competition.

He made a huge impact on loan at West Brom last season, scoring 24 times in 41 games, and has yet to play for Newcastle since his return.
