Will Lankshear: Tottenham starlet to be given Premier League chance as new loan eyed

Will Lankshear could be given a chance in the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur weigh up his long-term future, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a strong season at Championship side Oxford United and decisions are now set to be made about whether he can make the step up.

Roberto De Zerbi is keen to assess his entire squad when they return for pre-season training, and the striker could be handed a shot at a role in the first-team.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs have high hopes for Lankshear and he could be involved next season regardless of their position.

De Zerbi’s side remain in a closely-fought relegation battle with West Ham which will impact Tottenham’s ambitious transfer plans, as well as the striker’s future.

What have Tottenham got planned for Will Lankshear?

Football Insider revealed on 15 May that De Zerbi is keen to assess Lankshear and will keep a close eye on his development when he returns for pre-season.

Should he impress when given the opportunity at Spurs, there is every chance the striker could make his way into the boss’ plans in the Premier League.

However, there is equal chance he is sent back out on loan to continue his upwards trajectory, with clubs in the top flight as well as the Championship interested.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “I’m sure there’s clubs that are keeping tabs on Lankshear because of how well he did at Oxford on loan.

“Lankshear’s very highly regarded at Tottenham, they feel that he’s got a real chance of making the breakthrough there as well.

“Obviously no decision will be taken on his long-term future until Tottenham have clarity on which division they’re going to be in for next season as well.

“Until Tottenham know where they’re going to be, there’ll be no decisions made on any players.

“Lankshear will be hoping that it’s a clean slate for everybody this summer and he could be given an opportunity to try and stake a claim to become a regular in that Tottenham team.

“That could happen regardless of what league they’re in, even if they stay in the Premier League, if De Zerbi is impressed by what he sees in pre-season.

“But equally I’m sure there’ll be a host of clubs in England and abroad who would be interested in signing the England under-21 international on loan again.”

Which clubs could sign Lankshear on loan?

Lankshear’s future at Tottenham is being closely monitored by a number of clubs who could give him the chance to continue his development on loan next season.

Even if Spurs decide against giving him a chance next season, he could remain in the Premier League amid interest from multiple top-flight clubs.

Leeds United are believed to be keen on the striker as they aim to sign a partner for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, although they would likely prefer a permanent move.

Meanwhile, there are clubs believed to be willing to hand him the opportunity on loan, as Football Insider revealed Ipswich are interested in Lankshear.

The Tractor Boys were blocked in their pursuit of the striker in January and have won promotion to the Premier League, but could be tempted to renew their interest.
