William Gallas believes Arsenal could win the Premier League title next season if they don’t qualify for Europe.
The former Arsenal defender claim to TalkSport that the north London club could follow in the footsteps of current league leaders Chelsea, who look certain to lift the title this term in their absence of European football.
Arsenal have been hit hard in recent months by a miserable run of form, which has left them low on confidence and at risk of missing out on a place in the top four.
They have lost four of their last five Premier League games, while an embarrassing 10-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League also added to the misery in the Arsenal camp.
But Gallas thinks that missing out on a top-four finish and Champions League football could be a blessing in disguise for the club.
He told TalkSport: “If they are not qualified for the Champions League next season it would be one less competition for them and look what Chelsea are doing at the moment.
“They don’t play in the Champions League, they are top of the Premier League and everything is perfect for them.
“So if Arsenal don’t play in the Champions League next season maybe they can win the Premier League.”
The current precarious state of affairs at Arsenal has also drawn into the question the long term future of manager Arsene Wenger.
Wenger is out of contract at the end of the season, and has yet to make a decision on his future with a new two-year deal on the table.
But their recent form has seen calls from Arsenal fans for Wenger to walk away this summer significantly grow in number, and next season could potentially see a fresh start for the club in several areas.
However, the protests could become even greater if the club fail to beat rivals Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday.
They have already fallen to sixth in the Premier League, and a defeat to City could see them fall even further to seventh, behind Everton, and within alarming distance of West Brom.
