Winks urged to 'get out' of Tottenham after talks gets underway - pundit

Noel Whelan has admitted Harry Winks must “get out” of Tottenham for the good of his career.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old would be wasted playing a backup role under Nuno Espirito Santo.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (July 29th), Winks is in talks to leave Tottenham for a Premier League rival.

Director of football Fabio Paratici told the midfielder the club would listen to offers for him earlier this summer.

Nuno has given the England international the green light to depart.

Whelan insisted a player of Winks’ ability needs to be playing regular first-team football.

As such, he suggested an exit needs to happen before the transfer window closes.

Asked if Winks needed to leave Spurs, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, I do. Not long ago he was in the England setup.

“A player with that sort of ability needs to be playing.

“If he is surplus to requirements, not going to be getting the game time and not needed by Nuno, I think the best scenario for both club and player is to get him out of the club.

“Let him persist and carry on with his career somewhere else. Let someone else get to benefit from his talent.”

Winks played 30 times across all competitions for Spurs last season, although he only started nine Premier League games.

He picked up the last of his 10 England caps in November 2020.
