Wolves are interested in signing Southampton forward Sam Gallagher, according to a report.
The Express and Star claim that the Midlands club are hoping to win the race for the 21-year-old ahead of “several Championship rivals” to sign him on loan.
It is understood that the Englishman is set for a loan spell away from the Saints and is seen as a long-term alternative for the Premier League club.
Wolves have already been highly active in the transfer window and added nine new players, including the sensational £15million swoop for Ruben Neves for Porto.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are now looking to bring in the Southampton striker to help bolster their frontline.
Gallagher is a highly rated talent and spent last season on loan in the Championship with Blackburn, where he suffered a relegation.
However, the forward was one of their star performers and managed 12 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions.
He has made 20 senior appearances for Southampton in the past and looks like expiring another loan to gain more first-team experience.
Football Insider verdict:
Gallagher proved last season that he can score goals in the Championship and could be a good option at Molineux for the upcoming campaign. The 21-year-old is a big presence that can lead the line and it would be good for Wolves to sign players that have experience in English football. He has the potential to become a success with Southampton in the future and another loan spell to help his development is a good idea. Wolves are assembling a very strong squad and Gallagher would be a vital asset if signed. He would be competing alongside the likes of Nouha Dicko, Bright Enobakhare and Joe Mason for a starting position.
