Wolverhampton Wanderers cruised into the third round of the Carabao Cup with ease on Tuesday as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0.

It was a solid performance at Hillsborough, with the visitors rarely troubled by the League One side.

This was despite Cesar Peixoto making eight changes from the starting XI that beat Preston North End at the weekend.

One of the best performers against the Owls was defender Saheed Olagunju, who made his first team debut on the night.

The 19-year-old centre-back netted Wolves’ second against Sheffield Wednesday and was able to keep a clean sheet.

Now, the Molineux faithful is convinced that Olagunju could now be the next big player to emerge from the club’s academy.

Olagunju made his move to Wolves back in 2024, when he joined the club from Chelsea seeking to develop his career further.

Since then, he had remained in the academy until he was called upon by Peixoto for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie for the second round.

Here, he proved to be immense against the Owls, with his calmness at the back proving to be a major highlight of his performance on top of his goal.

As a result, Wolves fans flocked to X after the game to praise Olagunju, with many insisting that he has the potential to be a big player for the club in the future.

How good was Olagunju vs Sheffield Wednesday?

According to Fotmob on 26 August, Olagunju was excellent against Sheffield Wednesday in what was no doubt a debut to remember for the youngster.

Overall, he completed 80 per cent of his passes, created one chance, completed both of his attempted dribbles, produced four clearances, one interception, five recoveries, and won all three of his ground duels and won all four of his aerial duels.

As a result, it was a highly impressive debut and a performance that could keep him in Wolves’ first-team plans going into the rest of the campaign.

However, it remains to be seen if Olagunju can repeat such a display if he is called upon again later on in the season.
