Supercomputer predicts Wolves' chances of Championship promotion

Opta's supercomputer has released a new set of predictions for the Championship ahead of the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

Wolves are back in the second tier after eight years away after a largely successful stint in the Premier League.

The highs of European nights and cup runs felt a million miles away as they slipped to an inevitable relegation under Rob Edwards last season.

Edwards was surprisingly relieved of his duties in June as Portuguese boss Cesar Peixoto soon took charge.

They are now just days away from kicking off the new league campaign, but Opta are not backing the Old Gold to clinch automatic promotion as it stands.

Several teams are set to fancy their chances of going up, with more chances to win promotion as the play-offs expand to six teams.

Opta give Wolves a 19.2% chance of Championship promotion

Wolves kicked off their summer business in style with the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, but have only added one more fresh face to their squad since then with Rafiki Said joining from Standard Liege.

Several first-team stars have left, including Joao Gomes, Matt Doherty and Tolu Arokodare.

Peixoto's high-pressing style of play has yielded strong results ahead of the new season, with convincing wins over Doncaster, Racing Santander and Port Vale in the Carabao Cup.

Many Wolves fans will fancy their chances of bouncing back to the top flight, but Opta are currently predicting them to finish fourth, with a 19.2 per cent chance of automatic promotion and a 10.3 per cent chance of winning the title.

West Ham are being backed to win the league (17.2 per cent likely), while Southampton (13 per cent) and Middlesbrough (21 per cent) are also backed to win the league over Peixoto's side.

Wolves to miss out on Angel Gomes as Coventry plot move

Wolves are set to get the new Championship season underway against Blackburn at Molineux on Friday night, with kick-off at 8pm.

A busy end to the window is guaranteed as more stars leave and new signings arrive, but former loanee Gomes will not be back at the club for the coming campaign.

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Coventry are plotting a move for Gomes after he impressed their scouts at Wolves in the second half of last season.

The Old Gold had held an interest in re-signing him, but the four-cap England international is keen to continue playing in the Premier League.
