'Unbelievable' - Wolves fans fume as 27-year-old axed
Wolverhampton Wanderers fans were appalled to find out that Santiago Bueno has been left out of their registered squad in the Championship for the 2026-27 campaign.
It had been expected that the Old Gold club would leave one of their senior players out of the squad after they signed Bertrand Traore on a free transfer.
Wolves were in dire need of a winger, and it is hoped that the former Sunderland attacker can add much-needed quality to their attacking options.
However, the club’s backline is arguably in a worse spot at the minute, with them conceding 10 goals in their opening five Championship matches.
Therefore, supporters were baffled when Santiago Bueno was the player chosen to be dropped from the registered squad.
The centre-back was Wolves’ Player of the Season in the 2025-26 campaign, and is arguably the club’s best defender.
Wolves fans fume as Santiago Bueno is dropped from registered squad
For weeks, it has appeared likely that Bueno will depart the club sooner rather than later.
Despite the English transfer window being closed, plenty of foreign markets remain open, which could allow the Uruguay international to escape Molineux.
However, fans are furious that the club has taken the steps to allow Bueno to depart despite their ongoing defensive crisis.
As a result, many supporters took to X to slam the decision and questioned why other players weren’t chosen in his place.
How bad have Wolves been defensively in the Championship this season?
So far this season, few backlines have been worst that Wolves’.
To date, they have conceded 10 goals from just a 5.68 xG, which gives their side the third-worst underperformance in the division according to Opta.
On top of this, their opponents have the highest shot conversion rate in the Championship at 16.67 per cent, further emphasising their inability to defend when under pressure.
Therefore, it does seem strange that Wolves are willing to let their star centre-back depart, despite their ongoing issues at the back, which could end up costing them promotion.
However, it remains to be seen if the Old Gold side will come to regret this decision come the end of the campaign.
