Kevin Campbell has hailed Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a “brilliant signing”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Arsenal and Everton striker revealed how impressed he has been by the youngster installed as number one by Marcelo Bielsa.
Meslier joined Leeds permanently for around £5million over the summer after they triggered the option in his 2019-20 loan deal.
Campbell is in no doubt it is money well spent and delivered an upbeat verdict on the Frenchman despite letting in four goals in Leeds’ defeat to Leicester City on Monday night.
Asked by Football Insider for his verdict on Meslier, Campbell said:
“I have been really impressed with this young player. He has got a baby face! He is 20 but he looks about 18, he looks like a kid.
“He is strong, a good shot-stopper and his handling is so good. That is what surprised me. A lot of stuff comes at him and he holds onto it or gives it a good push away.
“Nothing is dropping around him. I am really, really impressed.
“Leeds’ recruitment staff have done an exceptional job getting him in. He is one for the future and for now. Only 20? Wow. Brilliant signing.”
Meslier has started all seven of Leeds’ Premier League matches this season after first taking over as number one when Kiko Casilla was hit with a racism ban earlier this year.
He has shipped 13 goals this term after letting in just five in his first 11 matches in a United shirt.
