'Wow, I almost jumped out of my chair' - Kevin Phillips in raptures at Tottenham player
Kevin Phillips heaped praise on Tottenham signing Steven Bergwijn after his “sensational” debut goal on Sunday.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said he “almost jumped out of his chair” when watching the 22-year-old open his account for Spurs with a wonder goal.
Bergwijn scored on his first appearance for the club as he sent a sumptuous volley past the helpless Ederson in the 2-0 against Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Holland international, who was ineligible for last night’s 3-2 FA Cup win against Southampton, had been thrown straight into the team at the weekend following his £27million move from PSV Eindhoven in January.
Phillips was stunned by how well the winger took his chance on what was a testing debut in North London.
“What a finish it was,” the ex-Sunderland striker told Football Insider.

“It is obviously a tough match to come into. Any game in the Premier League when you’ve come from another league is tough but to come in against Manchester City was always going to be a tough one.
“He worked extremely hard. At times he struggled to get into the game but he showed glimpses – good pace, trickery.
“The goal came out of nothing. It was not a great touch for me but he stoops low and the finish was sensational. Even I was like ‘Wow!’ I almost jumped out of my chair.
“He has been brought in to help fill the void left by Harry and if he can do that until the end of the season he will certainly do that.”
With Harry Kane expected to be out until April, at the earliest, the Lilywhites will be looking to their wide-forwards to produce the goals.
Daniel Levy failed in any attempts to bring in a replacement for the England captain in January.
