Rangers has got “two fantastic full-backs” in Borna Barisic and Calvin Bassey, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker, speaking to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, is blown away by the squad depth Steven Gerrard’s side boasts this season.

Bassey made just his second start for the Gers in a 2-0 win over Livingston on Sunday, his seventh appearance for the club since joining on a free from Leicester City in July.

Football Insider revealed that coaches have been hugely impressed by the left-back behind the scenes and in his handful of first-team appearances.

Whelan suggested that Bassey’s impact at Ibrox will have bring out the best in regular starter Borna Barisic.

“Rangers have got great competition for places,” he told Football Insider.

“Steven Gerrard has got two fantastic full-backs there keeping each other busy. One is fighting for the place and the other is reacting to it. That is what Steven Gerrard wants to see.

“He does not want people to be complacent and accept that they are doing well. Every player has to perform to keep their spot and that is how a squad should be. Players need to handle the pressure and right now Rangers are doing that.

“You look at their bench now and you think, ‘Wow. This is a strong bench.’ That is what a title-winning side needs.

“You need that strength of character and competition for places. It brings the best out of others.”
