Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Noel Whelan has ripped into Kiko Casilla for his Leeds United clanger against Wigan Athletic and insisted “you get what you pay for”.

The ex-United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that “not one goalkeeper in the Championship” fails to make mistakes over the course of the season.

The 33-year-old has come under scrutiny for his involvement in Wigan’s goal which was enough for all three points at Elland Road.

Casilla failed to deal with Joe Williams’ corner that deflected off Pablo Hernandez, in what should have been a routine save.

When asked whether Marcelo Bielsa should consider dropping the Spaniard, Whelan told Football Insider“I know Meslier is sitting there, and he did very well against Arsenal. But, when you look at the magnitude of these two games coming up, you cannot bring in a new player now.

“Any goalkeeper in the Championship is going to make mistakes. Unless you are going to pay £70million like Liverpool for a goalkeeper. There is not one goalkeeper in the Championship who is not going to make mistakes. You get what you pay for, unfortunately.

“It is a big mistake and I am sure he will be disappointed with himself and feel that he could have done a lot better. He could have been a lot stronger. He got the punch completely wrong as well.

“But no, Marcelo Bielsa will not change that because it is such a big position to take that chance.”

Illan Meslier, 19, made his only appearance of the season in a 1-0 away defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Bielsa’s side dropped to second in the Championship following last weekend’s loss and are now just three points clear of third-placed Fulham.
