Youssef Chermiti: Forget his goal contributions vs Motherwell, he may have cost Rangers the title

Youssef Chermiti should absolutely be disappointed with his Rangers display against Motherwell, despite grabbing a goal and an assist at Ibrox.

The 21-year-old has turned a corner following a tough start to life in the Scottish Premiership, now reaching 12 goals and four assists since arriving on an £8million deal from Everton last summer.

Very few were surprised to see him struggle in his opening few games for the Gers, but far more were taken aback when he began to prove them all wrong in front of goal.

However, the young centre-forward is far from the finished product, and with Rangers losing 3-2 to Motherwell on Sunday, 26 April, he may just cost his team in the race for the league title.

Youssef Chermiti wasted countless chances in Motherwell defeat

While Danny Rohl’s side were losing at home to the Steelmen, Hearts and Celtic were both taking advantage of the result, with the Gers now falling to third in the Scottish Premiership table.

The Light Blues are sitting four points behind first place, with four matches remaining, and their next clash is against Derek McInnes’ high flyers at Tynecastle Park on Monday, 4 May.

Rohl has been left with a huge decision in the centre-forward position, with Bojan Miovski experienced in attack but currently flopping, and Ryan Don Naderi sidelined through injury.

Although Chermiti has proved a lot of fans wrong, his wastefulness and failure to hold onto the ball against Motherwell became a huge disadvantage for the Gers, rendering his goal and assist meaningless.

Could Rangers already cash in on their new striker?

Chermiti has, undoubtedly, shown a lot of promise since arriving north of the border, but his inexperience continues to shine through at the most important times, such as against the Steelmen.

Football Insider understands that Rangers could already cash in on Chermiti for a profit, with PSV Eindhoven eyeing a deal for the former Everton man this summer.

Teams in the Scottish Premiership are usually viewed as a stepping stone in a footballer’s career, and the 21-year-old may already be on his way to his next club, especially if the Gers fail to win the title.

It seems extremely harsh, especially given that he helped his team to 2-2, before a late winner from Emmanuel Longelo, but his missed chances could have sealed all three points much earlier.
