Youssef Chermiti: Rangers star could be ‘forced’ out after confirmed news

Youssef Chermiti could see himself pushed down the pecking order and forced out of Rangers after they completed the signing of Lawrence Shankland.

The Ibrox club announced earlier this week that Shankland, 30, had joined from Hearts on undisclosed terms and has signed a two-year deal with the option to extend.

Danny Rohl had been keen to bolster his attacking options after multiple frustrating performances this season, and could now allow one of them to leave.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Chermiti could be the one to drop out amid ongoing questions about his future.

The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating season despite some heroic performances, but there is no shortage of interest, and Rangers could opt to cash in.

Could Rangers cash in on Youssef Chermiti?

Football Insider revealed in March that Rangers are concerned about Chermiti’s performances, and could be tempted to cash in for the right price.

While there have been no immediate plans to sell the striker, the door may now have opened following Shankland’s arrival, with Rohl looking to clear space in his squad.

Rangers now have four centre-forwards on their books, including Ryan Naderi and Bojan Misovski, with at least one considered likely to move on.

“Rangers have moved quickly to sign Shankland,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s somebody they’ve admired for a while, so when the opportunity came up, it was never going to be something they would miss out on.

“The problem for them now is, what do they do with their current strikers? Because they have players on the books who haven’t been performing.

“It’s clear that Shankland is coming in as the first choice, so that pushes everybody else down the pecking order, and somebody like Chermiti could now be forced out.

“He’s been very hit and miss since moving to Rangers and there’s been a lot of frustration around him, so that could tempt them to let him move on.

“There’s going to be interest in him because he’s still young and he’s shown glimpses of what he can do.

“It’ll be a question of the fee, but also there are others at Rangers who could be pushed out instead, so it’s going to be one to keep an eye on this summer.”

Which clubs are interested in signing Chermiti?

Despite what has been a frustrating first season in Scotland, there are a number of clubs across Europe believed to be keeping an eye on his situation.

His 11 league goals don’t tell the full story, as eight of those came across four games against Hearts and Celtic, and he could now be offered a way out.

Football Insider revealed last month that PSV are interested in signing Chermiti and could make a move to tempt him away from Ibrox when the window opens.

While Rangers are expected to demand a considerable fee to see him move on, there is a growing feeling that the arrival of Shankland could move the goalposts.

They paid an initial £8million to bring him in from Everton last summer and will likely expect a higher fee to allow him to move on in the near future.
