Rangers senior star looking for exit for this reason – report

Rob Kiernan could be set to quit Rangers after suffering a tirade of abuse from the club’s supporters, a report says.

According to the Scottish Sun, the defender may quit Ibrox after being battered with abuse by Rangers supporters against Ross County last Saturday.

Kiernan didn’t play in the 1-1 draw, after being dropped following a dismal display in a 4-1 loss to Hearts the week before.

He was making his way to the players’ lounge at half time when several stewards had to protect him from the angry supporters.

The 26-year-old held discussions with manager Mark Warburton at the club’s training ground on Tuesday.

Kiernan began his career at Watford, where he previously worked with Warburton, and has made 20 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season scoring one goal against Hearts in December.

He had played 90 minutes in every game this season since returning from a malleolar injury in October before being dropped for the Ross County tie.

The former Ireland under-21 international joined Gers in 2015 after a four year stint at Wigan, which included six loan spells to five different clubs.

It may be the case that Kiernan is left out of Warburton’s side again on Sunday when they face Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup fifth round at Ibrox.

Football Insider verdict:

It’s hard to tell what is said behind closed doors but it appears that Kiernan has been shaken up by what happened  at Ross County. He did well in the Scottish Championship when he helped Rangers win the title, but he has struggled to cope with the new weight of expectation now that Rangers are finally back in the Scottish top-flight. A move away from Ibrox will perhaps be the best thing for him and with a league title to his name, he won’t have much difficulty in finding a new club – whether it be in Scotland or back in the English Football League.
