Chris Iwelumo delivers Leeds verdict after draw against Ipswich
By Harvey Byrne
Channel Five pundit Chris Iwelumo has shared that he believes Garry Monk and Leeds will have had a “very successful season” if they can secure a place in the top six.
The Yorkshire giants were held on Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ipswich with goals from Freddie Sears and Stuart Dallas earning a point for both sides at Portman Road.
The stalemate saw Leeds remain in fifth place in the Championship table and Norwich’s shock defeat against Burton saw the Whites move seven points clear of the chasing pack.
Former Premier League striker Iwelumo has since shared that if Leeds finish in their current position then they will have had a good campaign, but he also told that he believes Monk’s side don’t have enough to break into the top two.
“Like you say, it’s all about collecting points,” started Iwelumo on Channel Five’s The Championship show on Saturday evening.
“You know the chasing pack, Norwich slipped up today, seven points I think it is now. I think the top two maybe have too much, but if they can establish themselves and get that play-off place and secure that then I think it’s been a very successful season for Monk.”
Brighton and Newcastle are currently occupying the automatic promotion spots with a five point gap between them and third placed Huddersfield.
They are currently 10 and eight points ahead of Leeds respectively and the Seagulls have played one game less than the Yorkshire side, while Newcastle have played two matches less.
Even if Leeds don’t break into the top two spots this season, if they finish fifth or higher it will be their best season since 2006 where they went to the play-off final before losing 3-0 to Watford.
They will be hoping for more success this time out and Monk certainly seems like a manager capable of helping them do so.
