20-year-old still has plenty to prove before Celtic should consider splashing the cash

Odsonne Edouard may have been the match-winner for Celtic against Rangers last week, but the 20-year-old showed that he was a long way from the finished article in a disappointing performance against Motherwell.

The Frenchman started for the Hoops at Fir Park, but after an indifferent display he was substituted in the 60th minute.

The player clearly has plenty of talent, as his winning goal at Ibrox showed, but he still has plenty to prove before the Hoops consider making his loan deal a permanent one.

In all honesty, despite his Old Firm winner, Edouard is still only the third best forward at the club. Both Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths are far superior strikers, and Griffiths was badly missed at Fir Park.

The Hoops would have to pay £7million, as reported by the Daily Record, to make the Frenchman’s loan move from PSG a permanent one, but as yet the player has not done enough to be worth that kind of money.

£7million is an awful lot of money for the Hoops to spend, and it would be a record transfer fee for the Hoops, as the previous largest amount spent is £6million for both Chris Sutton and John Hartson.

The Hoops really should try to get the player to return to the club for another loan spell, as it would properly give Brendan Rodgers another chance to properly asses the player’s abilities.

For the moment though, unless something changes between now and the end of the season, despite some good performances Edouard isn’t yet good enough to be the main man for the Hoops.
