22-year-old must be axed: Three things we learned about Leeds in win v Sheffield Wednesday
By Dominic Toner
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Leeds’ 1-0 home victory against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
Sacko should be dropped
Leeds attacker Hadi Sacko should be dropped from the starting line-up for the club’s next game. The 22-year-old is blessed with great skill and trickery, but was guilty of being very wasteful against Wednesday. The Whites have several talented wide options in their squad, with the Modou Barrow and Alfonso Pedraza joining in January. Monk needs to turn to one of his other options in future as Sacko has proved he is not yet ready. The winger managed to get into some good position in the game, but failed to feed in Chris Wood for what would have been a great goalscoring chance. Sacko still has lots in his game to develop and should be made to wait for another change.
Green unsung hero
Leeds striker Chris Wood has been a standout player for the team, but once again it was goalkeeper Rob Green who saved his team. He was fairly quiet for the majority of the game against a disappointing Wednesday attack, but was there for his team when needed. The experienced goalkeeper managed to save a Jordan Rhodes penalty with a brilliant finger tip save and has been the different on so many occasions this season. Green is certainly the unsung hero of the Leeds side and has reminded people this season why he was an England international.
Huge play-off boost
Leeds’ narrow 1-0 victory over Wednesday was arguably their biggest of their season so far. They got the job done against their Yorkshire rivals and Chris Wood once again delivered the goods. The Whites momentarily moved up to fourth-placed in the league, but more importantly they are now have a nine-point cushion over the teams chasing the play-off places. It would take a horrendous collapse now from Monk’s side to finish outside of the top six and they need to make sure they are in good form going into the play-offs.
