Manchester United agree fee to sell 24-year-old, deal could be completed next week – report

By Aramide Oladipo

Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela is on the verge of leaving the club this summer, according to a report.

The Manchester Evening News claims that the Premier League side have agreed a fee with top flight Argentinian outfit Peñarol to sell the 24-year-old which includes a sell-on clause.

The newspaper claims that the full-back is poised to put pen to paper on a three-year contract with his former side and the move could be sealed next week.

A source close to the defender is quoted as saying: “Guillermo decided to play in Peñarol for personal tranquility.

“The player decided it after how badly he was treated in Frankfurt. His experience in Europe was not good.”

The youngster was sent out on loan to Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt last season but he struggled with several injuries which saw him only feature in 10 matches throughout the campaign.

Varela only managed to make a total of 11 first-team appearances with United during his four years at Old Trafford.

Football Insider verdict

This appears to be the perfect situation for both parties. It seemed pretty clear that United boss Jose Mourinho was not keen on giving Varela a chance last season and he is unlikely to break his way into the first-team in the upcoming campaign. Varela is still a very young player and by moving back to his boyhood club, he could reignite his career and start playing on a regular basis and potentially secure a big move back to Europe in the near-future. The defender provided a bright spark during Louis van Gaal’s final season at Old Trafford but he potentially lacked the quality to maintain a sustained role in the first-team.

In other Manchester United news, Real Madrid want include this first-team player in a deal which could see Gareth Bale secure a move to Old Trafford.
