26-year-old must be axed: Three things we learned about Rangers in win v Greenock Morton
COMMENT By Harvey Byrne
Football Insider analyses three key talking points from Rangers’ 2-1 victory over Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
Foderingham must be axed
Wes Foderingham has been in a poor run of form for the club in recent matches, conceding five goals in his two matches prior to the Morton clash and Sunday was no different. The 26-year-old shot stopper was caught out by a long-range Michael Tidser strike after just seven minutes with his positioning well off. He didn’t have a lot else to do across the 90 minutes, but he almost cost his side another goal in the dying minutes after racing off his line before becoming a spectator as he watched the ball fly over an open goal. The signing of Jak Alnwick in January should have seen Foderingham improve his displays, but it has had the opposite effect and he must now be axed for the 23-year-old.
Senderos is the worst player in the squad
The current Rangers team is not without it’s faults at the moment with a number of players drawing heavy criticism from the Ibrox fan base. However, Philippe Senderos is comfortably the worst of the bunch. The 31-year-old was far from a player who had played with Arsenal, AC Milan and Everton to name a few during his career and on Sunday he was also at fault for the opening goal. The experienced man was caught ball watching before being dragged out of position, allowing Tidser a clear strike at goal. It will be very surprising if the Scottish giants renew Senderos’ deal which is set to run out in the summer and the club will be far better without him.
Murty is not the long-term answer
Since Mark Warburton’s departure from the Scottish giants on Friday evening nothing has been suggested that current caretaker boss Graeme Murty will be given the manager role full time. However, it is not uncommon for a board to often stick with the temporary boss rather than appoint someone else. But, if Sunday’s performance is anything to go by then Murty is simply not the answer at this stage in his career. The Gers only scraped a win against the Scottish Championship side at home and they failed to properly dominate the match. Rangers can attract far bigger names than the former Scotland international and at this moment in time Murty’s future lies with the youth team.
