£40,000-a-week Everton attacker earmarked by English club – report
By Harvey Byrne
Everton attacker Aiden McGeady has been earmarked by recently relegated club Middlesbrough, according to a report.
The Irish Independent have claimed on their website that the north east side view the 31-year-old as a player who could help them win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
However, it is also detailed that any deal now relies on the intentions of recently appointed manager Garry Monk with Boro’s interest in McGeady said to predate the senior man.
The experienced right-winger spent last season on loan in the Championship with Preston, winning their player of the season award.
It is detailed that Simon Grayson’s club would also be “very keen” to bring back McGeady in the next campaign.
However, it is also stated that McGeady is on a wage of around £40,000-a-week at Everton, which clubs such as Preston are not able to afford.
The 89-time capped Republic of Ireland international made the switch to Merseyside from Spartak Moscow in January 2014.
He was a frequent part of the team under former boss Roberto Martinez, but he has not played for the Toffees since the appointment of Ronald Koeman last summer and is going into the final year of his contract at the club.
Football Insider verdict:
The Championship is McGeady’s level now and all Everton should worry about with this transfer is getting the best possible deal. The former Celtic attacker is clearly not rated by Koeman and is not a part of the Dutchman’s plans going forward. Additionally, the Toffees have blooded a number of youngsters in their wide attacking positions in the last campaign and McGeady has only moved further down the pecking order since his temporary departure last summer. Therefore, a potential move to Middlesbrough or another Championship side permanently would certainly suit all parties.
In other Everton transfer news, the Toffees are among a number of Premier League clubs eyeing 18-year-old wonderkid.
