£40m-valued PL playmaker still in Koeman’s sights after Everton capture Klaassen – report
By Harvey Byrne
Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson is still “very much” in Ronald Koeman’s sights despite the signing of Davy Klaassen on Thursday, according to a report.
Welsh news outlet WalesOnline has detailed that the Toffees are remaining interested in the 27-year-old despite splashing out £26million for Klaassen from Ajax alongside being given a hands-off warning from the Swans hierarchy in May.
It is even stated that the Merseyside club would be willing to match Swansea’s minimum valuation of their star player which is set at £40million.
Sigurdsson would also not demand a move away from Swansea unless he receives an offer from a Champions League club.
He had previously left the Swans at the end of his loan deal in 2012 in order to complete a permanent move to Tottenham from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim.
But, he was back in Wales just just two years later as he was involved in a swap deal which saw Ben Davies move to north London.
Sigurdsson has since recaptured his impressive form at Swansea and last season alone he managed a return of nine goals and 13 assists from 38 Premier League appearances.
He is also still contracted to the club until 2020, but Everton could look to splash more money after already flexing their muscles in the transfer market by bringing in Klaassen and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Football Insider verdict:
Everton’s transfer business has already looked impressive with the captures of both Pickford and Klaassen, but while there were claims that they had overspent for the goalkeeper that will definiely be a concern if they shell out £40million for Sigurdsson. There is o doubt that the Iceland international is a very talented player and he would walk into a lot of Premier League teams. However, a £40million player he is not and the Toffees may be better suited exploring the European market than the inflated Premier League one.
In other Everton transfer news, the Toffees have opened talks over a player who played in the 2017 Champions League final.
