Pundit fires ‘big’ Arsenal warning after what he’s seen

Noel Whelan has warned Arsenal fans “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” as their side move clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the real test of the Gunners’ title credentials will come when they face a fellow ‘big six’ side.

Arsenal are the only Premier League side to have a 100% record so far this term after their 3-0 defeat of Bournemouth on Saturday (20 August).

Last season’s challengers Man City sit second on seven points, while Liverpool have picked up just two points from their opening three games.

Mikel Arteta’s side have bolstered their squad with the signings of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Fabio Vieira so far this summer.

Arsenal’s first test against a ‘big six’ side comes on 4 September when they face Man United at Old Trafford.

Whelan claimed Arsenal are the “sharpest” side he has seen thus far in the new campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “When you look at the teams they’ve played – it’s not been the hardest of starts.

“There are bigger tests to come. However, it’s been a fantastic start and you can only beat what is in front of you.

“They look the sharpest of all the teams I’ve seen in the Premier League, with the goals and the intensity they’ve shown so far.

“However, there are bigger tests to come. Bournemouth are a promoted side who haven’t spent a great deal.

“Arsenal fans will be excited, but it’s a marathon – not a sprint.”
