Leeds United employee shares emphatic Wilfried Gnonto claim after what he’s heard

Noel Whelan has claimed Wilfried Gnonto could be the “bargain of the season” if he can fulfil his lofty potential at Leeds United.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the youngster has looked “very bright” during training at Thorp Arch.

Gnonto signed for Leeds United on transfer deadline day (1 September).

Sources told Football Insider on 2 September FC Zurich wanted £7million for the Italian forward, 18, before eventually buckling and agreeing a £4million deal.

The former Inter Milan starlet, who has four caps for his country, is Italy’s youngest-ever senior goalscorer after his strike against Germany in June.

Gnonto has also racked up 74 senior appearances despite his youth – notching 12 goals and 10 assists in the process.

Whelan claimed the youngster could be “the bargain of the season”.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “The fact that he’s a full Italy international just shows how highly he’s rated.

“Leeds United went in for him, he’s 18 years old – it seems like he could be a real bargain, perhaps even the bargain of the season.

“From what people are saying on the training ground, he’s very bright, lively, strong, quick.

“He could be good value for a few goals in the first-team this season.”

Leeds United sit ninth in the Premier League table after six games.

Gnonto joins fellow youngsters Sam Greenwood, Crysensio Summerville, and Joe Gelhardt in the Whites’ attack.
