£600m Man United reveal is ‘hard for fans to take’ – pundit

Recruitment is not the problem at Man United, according to Kevin Campbell.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker claimed “the buck stops” with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the Red Devils’ dismal start to the 2021-22 campaign.

Man United were humiliated 5-0 by Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire revealed after the loss that United have spent £310million more on wages and £600million more on transfers (net) than Liverpool over the past decade.

Campbell believes United’s squad is up there with Liverpool’s in terms of quality despite Sunday’s result.

“I think you can look too deep into all of that,” he told Football Insider.

“Look at both squads, I wouldn’t say Liverpool’s is that much better.

“It’s the chemistry in that Liverpool squad that is outstanding. You could see it on Sunday. There was no comparison to United.

“Yes, it’s cost a lot of money to build that United squad and they should be doing better. But it’s the camaraderie, the connection, the fight, the cohesion which is missing – not the quality.

“At the end of the day, that is down to the management. That is the hardest thing for United fans to take. Their team looks so disjointed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Man United

“There is nothing wrong with the recruitment. There are great players there. The problem is how you mould them. Solskjaer is not doing that right now. The team need to gel.

“They need to find a fix and they need to find a fix quick. The buck stops with the manager, regardless of what anybody else thinks.”
