Day one of the new Premier League season and Jonjo Shelvey was already writing himself into the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
A stamp on Dele Alli saw him banned from the off and questions over his temperament and discipline rose their head once again after a career littered with misdemeanours.
Even when he did return to the starting XI his impact left much to be desired, showing mere glimpses of the incredible talent the Newcastle faithful know he possesses.
Whatever his new year’s resolution was, it did the trick.
Shelvey has had an exceptional 2018, partly due to the improvement shown by midfield partner Mo Diame, and while his stats might not show the full story, he has been absolutely crucial to the Magpies’ play.
