Celtic swoop to sign £8.8m centre-forward on the cards – report
Celtic could sign Paris Saint-Germain centre-forward Odsonne Edouard on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window as Brendan Rodgers looks to ensure he stays at Parkhead after his loan deal expires, according to a report.
French radio station RMC Sport claimed on their website that the Hoops have an option to buy Edouard, 20, for £8.8million – a fee that would shatter the club’s current transfer record which was set in 2000 when Chris Sutton signed for £6million.
It is understood that Rodgers wants Edouard to be a long-term replacement for Moussa Dembele, who has been widely-linked with a move to the Premier League in the last year.
The Daily Mail has previously reported that the option to buy clause in Edouard’s loan deal is only £7million.
Football Insider verdict
Edouard has been a great signing for Celtic. He joined on transfer deadline day in the summer to much disappointment as many thought that Rodgers had to strengthen his defence first. However the Frenchman has been a solid loanee and has probably delivered more than the likes of Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele, given the fact that he has played less. Edouard has scored six goals in his 10 Scottish Premiership starts and he was a key player in helping the Bhoys beat Rangers in their last two Old Firm meetings. At just 20-years-of-age, he could go on to be a very good signing for Celtic, although the £8.8million fee mentioned by RMC Sport seems to be a lot. Should Rodgers finally break a near-two decade old record to sign Edouard? Fans may be a bit underwhelmed that the record won’t be broken on a bigger name, but it will still be a decent signing.
