Chelsea have ‘no way out’ of points deduction after ‘biggest breach so far’ – Wyness
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has suggested Chelsea could have “no way out” of a serious points deduction with their lavish spending set to result in the “biggest breach so far” of financial rules.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there will be “unhappy” Blues fans in 2025 unless their side can pull off some “very clever engineering in the transfer market”.
Chelsea have now spent more than £920million (as per Transfermarkt) since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club in 2022.
The Blues announced a loss of £90.1million for the 2022-23 campaign earlier this month, down from a £121.4million deficit in the previous season.
Under current Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose a maximum of £105million over three years.
‘Biggest breach so far’ at Chelsea – ‘there’s no way out’, says Wyness
Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been handed points deduction for breaching PSR.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think this time next year, we’re going to be sitting here discussing the Chelsea rule breach.
“I don’t think the Premier League have left themselves anywhere else to go but a serious points deduction.
“I think Chelsea could have had the biggest breach so far – unless there is some very clever engineering done in the transfer market, but I think it will be very hard to do.
“Listen, don’t underestimate Todd Boehly and his ability and connections with Saudi Arabia.
“There is a lot of connections between Saudi and his investment group to try and pull something out of the fire, but I feel there is no way out of this one for Chelsea.
“This time next year, we’ll be talking about unhappy Chelsea fans.

“There will be a lot more documents from the Everton and Nottingham Forest cases setting up precedents for how these things are going to be handled.
“It won’t be pleasant reading for Chelsea.”
