‘Aaron Ramsdale emerges as Sunderland target with Petrovic decision made’

Sunderland have set their sights on Aaron Ramsdale thanks to a major update regarding Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic’s future.

Amid their efforts to survive in the Premier League, Sunderland have signed Chemsdine Talbi from Club Brugge.

The winger became the Black Cats’ fifth summer addition, following deals for midfield trio Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, and Noah Sadiki, as well as former Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have eyed a move for Petrovic, who maintained 10 clean sheets in Ligue 1 during a loan stint with Strasbourg last term.

Sunderland set sights on Ramsdale as Bournemouth close in on Petrovic

The Stadium of Light side’s interest in a new goalkeeper indicates that Sunderland could part company with Anthony Patterson.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook revealed via X on Thursday, 10 July, that Bournemouth are closing in on Petrovic, ruling Regis Le Bris’ side out of the race.

However, Crook also reported that the Mackems have identified Southampton’s Ramsdale and Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as alternatives.

Ramsdale struggled at Southampton last season

Before joining Southampton last summer, Ramsdale spent three seasons with Arsenal, serving as Mikel Arteta’s number one before falling down the Gunners’ pecking order, courtesy of David Raya’s presence.

The 27-year-old maintained just three clean sheets in the Premier League as the Saints were relegated back to the Championship last term, but his previous Arsenal exploits portray him in a much better light.

Meanwhile, former Sunderland assistant manager Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that Southampton are plotting to sign Patterson.

The South Coast club’s interest in the Mackems goalkeeper shows that they are gearing themselves up for Ramsdale’s increasingly imminent exit.

Le Bris can use the fact that Southampton want to sign Patterson to his advantage when it comes to negotiating terms for Ramsdale.

Elsewhere, Sunderland have been tipped to sign Dynamo Kyiv striker Vladyslav Vanat in a Mackem News exclusive.
