Aberdeen agree to sign Dimitar Mitov as medical gets underway – sources

St Johnstone goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov is having a medical at Aberdeen today ahead of his move to Pittodrie, sources have told Football Insider.

Mitov was named St Johnstone’s Player of the Year last season following several impressive performances at McDiarmid Park.

Aberdeen have now triggered the release clause in the Bulgaria international’s contract as his switch to the north-east of Scotland edges closer.

Jimmy Thelin’s side have moved to sign the 27-year-old after first-choice goalkeeper Kelle Roos left the club following the expiry of his contract.

Mitov’s deal with St Johnstone is set to run until May 2025, but he is now expected to join Aberdeen barring an unexpected late twist taking place.

Dimitar Mitov set to make Aberdeen move after St Johnstone form

Mitov only joined the club on a free transfer last summer after spending six years with Cambridge United.

During his time with the English League One side, the goalkeeper made 165 appearances and kept 42 clean sheets.

He followed that form up with St Johnstone last season after keeping nine clean sheets in 41 games despite the club’s struggles in the Scottish Premiership.

After earning his first call-up to the Bulgaria national team last September, Mitov has now made three appearances for his country.

The goalkeeper is now closing in on a move to Aberdeen as they look to replace Roos following his departure from Pittodrie this month.

The Dutchman kept 13 clean sheets in 52 appearances across the campaign, with Aberdeen finishing the season in seventh place.

Alongside Roos, the club have confirmed Connor Barron, Anthony Stewart, Jonny Hayes, Kieran Ngwenya, Finlay Murray, Kai Watson, Aaron Reid, Chris Kondolo and Reuben Smillie have all left Pittodrie following the expiration of their contracts.
