‘Absolute clown’ – Tottenham fans rip into Thomas Frank after ‘disgusting’ Mathys Tel news
Tottenham fans have lambasted under-fire manager Thomas Frank after he decided to drop Mathys Tel from his Champions League squad for Dominic Solanke.
Tel initially moved to Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich in the last January window after struggling to make an impact for the German giants in the first-half of the season.
He joined Tottenham on a permanent deal in June after a decent temporary spell at the club, and has netted three goals in 20 appearances so far this term.
Tel was not named in Tottenham’s Champions League squad earlier in the campaign, but did find his way into it last month in place of injured striker Solanke after they found a loophole in the rules.
The 20-year-old has struggled to make an impact under Frank so far this season, and he has now suffered another setback to his hopes of making it in North London due to the Dane’s latest controversial decision.
Tel has been dropped from Tottenham’s UCL squad for Solanke
Tottenham fans fumed at the decision not to include Tel in their Champions League squad, and he featured for just 32 minutes against Slavia Prague last month after making his way into it in place of Solanke.
Tel has been linked away from Tottenham in recent weeks amid a struggle for consistent game time, and he could well accelerate his exit search soon after this latest setback.
Frank has officially removed the 20-year-old from his UCL squad to reintroduce Solanke, who recently returned to action after over four months out with an ankle problem.
The Spurs boss spoke to the media on Monday about his controversial call, saying: “It was not a nice decision to have to make. Unfortunately that’s football, you have to make a decision.
“With the way the rules are, the only option was either Dom or Mathys in the squad. I think Mathys has done very well in the last couple of games, and that’s the crazy thing, if I could pick from all the players that are fit, then he would start tomorrow.
“But I can only pick between the two of them and now he is out of the squad. That’s of course a tough one to take for Mathys.”
Football Insider recently revealed that Tottenham have no plans to let Tel leave this month, despite interest in his services from abroad, but this latest development may be his final straw in terms of pushing to depart.

Frank is under real pressure at Spurs right now, with a recent run of three straight defeats plunging his future at the club into even deeper uncertainty.
Sources have told Football Insider that Frank will be sacked by Spurs if their results do not improve immediately, which many fans would be even happier to see after his snub of Tel.
Taking to X to react to the squad change, one fan said: “I think Frank knows he is getting sacked and is setting us up to fail. Why drop our most in-form player for someone half-fit who will not even start? His treatment of Tel is worrying and I hope Tel knows he will outlast Frank. Absolute clown.“
Another said: “His (Tel) treatment by Frank has been disgusting. Take someone else out, the kid’s good.“
While one supporter added: “That alone is a sackable offence. He must be trolling at this point. It’s sabotage. Get him gone.“
