‘Absolute dross’ – Liverpool fans blast ‘one trick pony’ starter who had 64% pass completion vs Sunderland
Liverpool fans were not at all happy with one of their players after his poor performance during their 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday night.
Liverpool failed to build on their win at West Ham as they were held to a draw by high-flying Sunderland at Anfield with another lacklustre home performance.
It took until the 68th minute for the opener to be scored as Chemsdine Talbi’s deflected effort flew past Alisson, with the leveller notched nine minutes from time as Nordi Mukiele diverted Florian Wirtz‘s shot into the net.
Both teams had chances to win it late on, with the visitors coming closest as Federico Chiesa denied Wilson Isidor with a goal-line block after a quick counter attack.
Arne Slot’s job is in danger right now as the Reds continue to struggle following their title win, and he is not doing himself any favours by picking a certain player who is not liked by many fans at the minute.
Cody Gakpo barely made an impact vs Sunderland before half-time substitution
Cody Gakpo has struggled for form this season after becoming Liverpool’s first-choice left-winger following Luis Diaz’s exit.
He scored in the Reds’ win at West Ham, but was not at the races against Sunderland as nothing that he tried came off and he was rightly replaced by Mo Salah at half-time.
Gakpo’s 45 minutes on the pitch saw him complete just seven of his 11 attempted passes (64 per cent accuracy), while he won just one of five attempted duels, took one blocked shot, and only had two touches in the Sunderland box.
His replacement Salah has been tipped to leave Liverpool soon after being dropped by Slot, but showed flashes of his old self in the second-half as he created the most chances of any player (4) and nearly doubled the amount of touches of the ball that Gakpo had, with 48 compared to his 26.
Liverpool fans rip into Gakpo for ‘absolutely garbage’ performance
Gakpo has started 12 of the Reds’ 14 Premier League games so far this season, but their fans do not want to see that figure added to anytime soon.
They took to X in their numbers to slate the Dutchman following his showing vs Sunderland, with one saying: “Gakpo is absolute dross. A pathetic goal and assist against West Ham covered up how awful he is for us.”
After one fan admitted that they could not express their contempt properly, another added: “I’ll say it for you, Gakpo you’re slow, predictable and subpar. Everyone knows you cut inside and shoot all the time u one trick pony.”
While one supporter also wrote: “I don’t care if Gakpo gets a tap in tonight, he is absolutely garbage.”
