Adam Lallana: Liverpool must turn to senior player to win ugly
By Dominic Toner
Adam Lallana claims that experienced Liverpool player James Milner can help the team end their poor run of results.
The Reds have just one victory in their last 10 matches across all competitions and a five-game winless run in the Premier League has crushed their title aspirations.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have slipped down to fifth in the league table and are 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, meaning obtaining a top four position is now a priority.
The Merseyside club have suffered defeats to the likes of relegation threatened Hull and Swansea recently, and are no longer playing the attractive style of football that was dismantling teams at the beginning of the season.
Lallana feels that experienced campaigner Milner can help Liverpool discover the art of winning ugly, something that they have struggled to do this season.
“You don’t have to always win by scoring five or six. Maybe that’s an area we need to improve on,” Lallana said, as quoted by the Echo.“Milly (Milner) is probably the only one in our group who has that type of experience because it only comes from winning silverware like he did at Manchester City.
“Myself and the other players haven’t won titles or loads of cups so we need to learn from him and listen to him because that type of experience is vital.”
Liverpool have relied upon outscoring their opponents on numerous occasions this season as they have an impressive frontline of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.
However, they have conceded 30 league goals so far this season and have had major difficulties defensively.
Tottenham hold the best defensive record of just 16 goals conceded in the top-flight this campaign, while Liverpool’s tally is the worst out of the top six sides.
Milner is one of the most experienced players in the dressing room and previously won the Premier League title on two occasions with Manchester City.
The 31-year-old is an important member of the current Liverpool squad and is a regular feature in the starting line-up at left-back.
Central midfielder Lallana believes that several players can turn to Milner for advice as he possesses vital knowledge.
