Adam Wharton: Liverpool could accelerate move for Crystal Palace star after Anfield audition

Adam Wharton remains high on the list of transfer targets at Liverpool following his impressive performance for Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Liverpool were keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old’s performance during their 3-1 win at the weekend, and are believed to have been happy with what they saw.

The England international is highly regarded by the Reds’ transfer team as they aim to bring additional quality to Arne Slot’s midfield when the summer window opens.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool believe Wharton would bring something different to their midfield.

Having been impressed by his performance against them despite the result going against Wharton’s side, they could look to land him in another big transfer window for Liverpool.

Could Liverpool sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace?

Brown told Football Insider last month that Liverpool could step up their interest in Wharton when the summer window opens to beat rivals to his signature.

The Reds are not the only club keeping an eye on his performances, with Man United, Man City and Real Madrid all having sent scouts to keep tabs on him.

However, there is a feeling that they would be well-placed to lure him in as their rivals eye other options, and a big-money deal could be agreed with Palace.

“Liverpool were keeping a close eye on Adam Wharton’s performance,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s somebody they’ve been aware of since his time at Blackburn with the connections they’ve got there, so they know plenty about him.

“A good performance at Anfield is another feather in the cap for him, because it counts for a lot when you see somebody doing well against your own midfield.

“So it wouldn’t surprise me if they made a move for him, he certainly ranks highly there.

“There’s lots of talk about Wharton and whether he can leave Palace, and it will take a big fee to get him out, but Liverpool will feel they can go and get him.

“Their midfield at the moment is a big stale, a bit the same, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way because they’ve got a very good midfield.

“But Wharton, his range of passing, how silky he is in possession of the ball, he would add something to Slot’s team that they haven’t got at the moment.”

Why do Liverpool want to sign Wharton?

Liverpool’s interest in a move for Wharton comes amid concerns about a number of their current options, both in their performances and futures at the club.

After what has been a difficult season at Anfield despite their strong league position, Slot could look to revamp his side, with players set to be allowed to leave.

Football Insider revealed on 22 April that Alexis Mac Allister could leave Liverpool, with the club tempted to entertain offers when the summer window opens.

No headway has been made towards handing the Argentina international a new contract, leading to suggestions he could be lured away.

Real Madrid have been long-term admirers of his, and should the Reds identify a replacement like Wharton for example, there is a growing feeling a deal could be done.
