Agbonlahor can’t believe £50m+ Chelsea -Ben Chilwell development

Chelsea may be losing faith in Ben Chilwell and have worries over his injuries, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict as Chelsea close in on a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion left-back Marc Cucurella.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday (3 August) that they have tabled a bid of over £50million for Cucurella to Brighton.

It is claimed the 23-year-old is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge and has already agreed personal terms with the club.

He will compete with Chilwell to be Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice left wing-back.

Chilwell, 25, missed over six months of the 2021-22 season with an ACL injury but made his return on the final day and has regularly featured in pre-season.

“Chelsea have got Chilwell,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Why pay £50million for a left-back when you have Chilwell?

“What does that say to Chilwell? Yes, he’s had a few injuries, do Chelsea not think he can keep fit to be the number one left-back? It’s very strange.

“But then Chelsea had Ashley Cole at Wayne Bridge at the same time so maybe it’s something that club likes, to have two left-backs of high quality.

“It’s an interesting one.”

Chilwell has played 55 times across all competitions for Chelsea since his move from Leicester City in the summer of 2020.

The England international is under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2025.
